Short answer: Snapchat says creators may be invited to its Monetization Program when they have at least 50,000 followers, 15,000 hours of view time over the last 28 days with at least 3,000 of those hours from Spotlight, Snap Star status, an eligible country, original advertiser-friendly public content, and a compliant account. Meeting those criteria does not guarantee an invitation. Invited creators can receive a share of revenue from ads placed within Public Stories and eligible Spotlight videos.

Fifty thousand followers is only one gate
Creators often hear a follower threshold and treat it like a finish line. Snapchat's program does not work that way.
The platform says creators may be invited when they meet a group of criteria. A creator can have 50,000 followers and still lack the required recent watch time, Spotlight mix, Snap Star status, original public content, eligible geography, or account standing. Even a creator who appears to satisfy every published signal may not receive an immediate invitation.
The useful job is invitation readiness: understand each gate, maintain the rolling window, and keep the account able to accept and receive payouts if Snapchat sends the invitation.
Current invitation criteria
Snapchat's official program page currently lists these conditions:
- at least 50,000 followers;
- at least 15,000 hours of view time in the last 28 days;
- at least 3,000 of those hours from Spotlight;
- at least 18 years old or the legal age of majority in the creator's country;
- residence in an eligible country;
- Snap Star status;
- original advertiser-friendly content posted to Public Stories or Spotlight;
- compliance with Community Guidelines, Content Guidelines for Recommendation Eligibility, Monetization Terms, and related policies.
The wording matters: these are criteria under which a creator may be invited. They are not a public automatic enrollment promise.
Snap Star is a real requirement

Snap Star is Snapchat's verified creator designation. It is not simply a paid badge or a follower-count setting.
Snap evaluates factors such as account authenticity, public presence, audience engagement, cultural relevance, content quality, and notability. The exact review is Snapchat's. Creators should use the current in-app or official Snap Star process where available and avoid anyone promising guaranteed verification for a fee.
Make the public profile complete and consistent:
- recognizable display name and profile image;
- clear biography and content premise;
- regular original public posting;
- a reliable public presence on and, where relevant, beyond Snapchat;
- no impersonation, artificial engagement, or misleading account identity;
- current email, phone, and security settings.
Snap Star status can be removed. Treat authenticity and policy compliance as ongoing operations, not application theater.
Build the 28-day watch-time tracker
The watch requirement is a rolling window. Each day, the oldest day drops out and the newest day enters.
Track:
Metric | Readiness target | Current 28-day total | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
Followers | 50,000 | ||
Total public watch hours | 15,000 | ||
Spotlight watch hours | 3,000 | ||
Non-Spotlight public watch hours | No separate minimum | ||
Snap Star | Required | Yes/No | |
Eligible country and age | Required | Yes/No |
If analytics show minutes, convert them:
Watch hours = watch minutes ÷ 60
For example, 720,000 watch minutes equals 12,000 watch hours. If 180,000 of those minutes came from Spotlight, that equals 3,000 Spotlight hours. The creator would meet the Spotlight portion but remain 3,000 total hours short.
Do not add lifetime totals or use views as a substitute for watch time. A view can be very short; the criterion is hours in the last 28 days.
Initial invitation and ongoing maximum rewards are different
Snapchat's program page also says that beginning in May 2026, creators need to maintain at least 100 hours of Spotlight view time over the previous 28 days to remain eligible for maximum rewards.
That line can be confusing next to the invitation criteria.
- 3,000 Spotlight hours is part of the listed initial 15,000-hour invitation profile.
- 100 Spotlight hours is described as an ongoing threshold for maximum rewards after the May 2026 change.
Do not replace one with the other. Check the exact notice in My Creator Rewards or the current help page for how the maintenance rule affects the account.
What content can earn
Invited creators can share revenue from ads placed between Snaps in Public Stories and within eligible Spotlight content.
For Spotlight revenue sharing, Snapchat says the submitted video must be at least one minute long. A short Spotlight post can still help discovery, but it does not satisfy that minimum for the monetization program.
Content also needs to be:
- original;
- advertiser-friendly;
- public in the eligible surface;
- compliant with recommendation and monetization policies;
- made with rights to the underlying audio, video, people, and material.
Originality is more than removing another platform's watermark. The creator should supply the idea, performance, reporting, commentary, story, or transformation the audience came for. Reposting other people's clips, misleading thumbnails, engagement bait, or artificial activity can undermine both recommendation and monetization eligibility.
Design for watch time without padding
A one-minute minimum does not mean every idea deserves 61 seconds. Stretching a ten-second premise makes weak content and can lower watch time.
Longer Spotlight formats that can earn their length include:
- a clear story with a change or resolution;
- a demonstration with setup, process, and result;
- a ranked explanation with meaningful distinctions;
- a behind-the-scenes process viewers cannot see elsewhere;
- a question answered with evidence;
- a recurring series where each episode stands alone.
For Public Stories, plan a sequence rather than an accidental pile of clips. Open with the reason to watch, give each Snap a job, and remove repetitions that add duration without value.
The goal is not to trap someone into watch time. It is to make the next Snap or next second worth choosing.
How Snapchat payouts work
Snapchat does not publish one fixed creator RPM. Revenue depends on program and content performance factors, advertiser demand, audience, eligibility, and the platform's current calculations.
Invited creators can see rewards in My Creator Rewards and cash out eligible rewards through Snapchat's payout process. Snapchat currently lists a $100 minimum to cash out and says cash-out may be available daily once the eligible balance meets the threshold.
Creators should complete identity, tax, and payment-provider steps accurately. Processing time after a cash-out request can differ from the moment a reward first appears.
Use actual rewards for forecasting
Once the account has several payout periods, record:
- eligible Public Story and Spotlight content;
- watch time by surface;
- reward amount;
- audience country mix;
- posting days and content formats;
- policy or eligibility notices;
- cash-out date and received date.
Build a low, base, and high scenario from the creator's own data. Do not multiply total Spotlight views by a rate from another account.
If the invitation has not arrived
Use a gate-by-gate diagnosis.
Confirm the account actually meets the rolling numbers
Check the exact 28-day period. A strong week from last month may have fallen outside the window.
Confirm Spotlight contributes enough hours
A creator can have 15,000 total hours and still miss the 3,000-hour Spotlight portion.
Confirm Snap Star status
A public profile or large following is not the same as Snap Star.
Review account and content standing
Look for policy notices, recommendation limits, rights issues, or monetization restrictions. Resolve the stated problem rather than deleting content at random.
Confirm country, age, and payout readiness
Availability depends on residence and legal age. Account information needs to match the creator's real identity.
Give the system time without assuming a guarantee
Snapchat controls invitations. Meeting the published criteria makes the account look ready; it does not create a contractual right to admission. Use official support routes for account-specific questions and be cautious with anyone selling access.
Creator Subscriptions are a separate program
Snapchat announced Creator Subscriptions in limited alpha in 2026. They allow selected creators to offer subscriber-only benefits and content.
That is not the same as the unified Monetization Program and should not be included in an ad-revenue forecast unless the creator has actual subscription access. A creator can be interested in both, but the eligibility, product, audience promise, and revenue source are different.
